You can use any yarn weight you like to, for the entire toadstool doll.
The same goes for the snail and the main part of the collar.
However, the optional lace border on the toadstools collar is made in a lighter yarn weight.
In addition to the original sized doll portrayed in this pattern, I have listed some possible yarn weight options below.
Yarn amount and hook sizes may vary according to your personal preference.
For colors I recommend a minimum of 4 different for the toadstool, and 3 for the snail.

TINY – Lace weight with sewing thread. 14″ 10” (25 cm) // 1.50 and 0.75
ORIGINAL – Sock weight with lace weight. 14” (36 cm) // 2.00 and 1.50
MEDIUM – Sport weight with lace weight. 16” (45 cm) // 2.50 and 1.75
UP-SIZED – Worsted weight with sock weight. 25” (65 cm) // 4.50 and 2.00

Hooks:
2.0 mm hook for the doll and a 1.5 mm hook for the lace border.
Sock weight: 50 g (1.75 oz) // 170 m (186 yds)

Tools and other materials:
Wire, for the arms and legs, to make them poseable.
Chopstick (or other tool) to help filling the legs.
Ribbon to tie the collar.
Strong pliers.
Scissors.
Needle.
Fiber filling.
Optional extras:
Black acrylic paint (or the same color as yarn chosen for hands and feet)
Two small brushes and some water.
Blocking matt and needles to pin down the lace.
Scrap yarn in minimum 3 different colors for the snail(s).
