You can use any yarn weight you like, just make sure to use the same weight for the entire pattern.
I have listed the yarn and how much I have used below. You can go bigger or smaller if you like.
Yarn amount and hook size may vary according to your tension and personal preference.

Heart:

Scrap yarn:
One RND of 6 SCs: Pupil – Black (009)
One RND of 12 SCs: Eye color – Christmas Red (086)
One RND of 18 SCs: Eye color – Olive (072)
3 g. (0.10 oz.) Eyeball – Vanilla (052)
Brain:
15g. (0.52 oz.) Primary Color – Old Rose (046)
Double strand yarn would use up approximately 45g (1.58 oz.)
TOOLS & OTHER MATERIALS
Hook size 2.50 mm (B/1)
Scissors. (for yarn and paper)
Needle.
4 stitch markers (pins) in 2 different colors.
10 pins.
Fiber filling.
Strong steel wire, gauge 18 (1.02mm) and pliers.
If you work with heavier yarn than fingering, adjust wire gauge accordingly. You could choose to use double wire if a thicker gauge is not available to you. Wire hangers work also.

Advanced
This pattern has simple stitch variations and techniques, but assembly requires a lot of attention to detail and some patience. It contains clearly explained instructions for each row and round, including many step-by-step photos and other visual aids.
This pattern has been tested by 10 different people with a variety of skill levels.
